Grace Navalta wanted her writing friends to share an open mic night in Pleasanton. The coffee shop where the fun began changed owners. Grace approached Vince, owner of Me and My Friends Cafe and Deli with the idea. “Okay, we’ll try it,” he said. “We’ll see if it works.” The deli, then open only for breakfast and lunch, opened one evening each month for an informal open mic.
Who could resist Grace’s enthusiasm? Within a few months, we packed the tables in the small deli as she emceed the event with her touches of humor. We applauded the readers between bites of scrumptious food and beverages. We stuffed money in the tip jar (Vince refused to let us pay full menu prices).
Cancer took Grace away with only a few months warning, but her friends stepped in to continue Open Mic. Vince expanded the deli square footage, but rough spots during the economic downturn slowed the deli’s expansion progress. Your vote for Me and My Friends could provide a grant to let Vince, the big man with a bigger heart, complete the upgrades.
If you’re a writer, join us, June 25, 2012 at 6:00 p.m. for an evening with friends.
